So this could be a win-win here. Checking in with colleagues in the area, when this is done, temporary courtrooms are set up, and the benefits are large for both the law enforcement community and those with outstanding traffic related warrants, especially.
I am therefore suggesting that Mayor Menino, Sheriff Cabral, and Governor Deval Patrick take a serious look at a “Fugitive Safe Surrender” event.

Amber, I mean this as a friendly question, not a snarky question. Can’t a fugitive drop by the police station to surrender himself anytime he choses? I would understand the idea if the government were promising some preferential treatment in return for surrender (like a tax amnesty program), but that doesn’t seem to be the case, at least based on the article you’ve linked.
<
p>Can you clarify this proposal? Is the suggestion that we should give fugitives some preferential treatment in return for surrender? Or is the suggestion that announcing a “safe surrender” program, and holding it at a friendly place like a church, is itself somehow worthwhile?

It appears [as covered in the Detroit Free press] of those 7000 folks, only 3 were jailed, from the coverage here is Detroit. If there is interest, I can ask for more information directly from those involved while I am “here” in Michigan.
<
p>I did provide a link to local coverage.
<
p>Apparently Wayne County had 18,000 unserved warrants and this 4-day program led to 10,524 warrants being served safely, and without chasing the folk who had outstanding warrants.

I remember a different and better Detroit; the ’68 World Series, the Arsenal of Democracy, good high paying union jobs, 90% market share, “is GM too big?”, and Honda making motorcycles not cars.

p>This the change you get when you don’t get the change you need.

p>But, boy those casino’s really turned things around didn’t they?
