ACLU files lawsuit on behalf of Newton resident, others, to overturn gene patent

May 13, 2009 By ACLUm blog

Yesterday, the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the patent granted to Myriad Genetics, for genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer.

The news release is here:

A YouTube video, which includes an interview with Lisbeth Ceriani of Newton, Mass., is here:

The patents granted to Myriad give the company the exclusive right to perform diagnostic tests on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and to prevent any researcher from even looking at the genes without first getting permission from Myriad.
