what does it mean when the Boston Globe (or any other newspaper) endorses a candidate? Who cares?

    <

p>Why would an endorsement from a newspaper make any impact on us as individuals? Are they all-knowing because they work with the news every day? Since newspapers have extreme bias, why would their endorsement be any more than a formalization of their daily editorial diatribes?

    <

p>This may be a traditional practice of our country but IMO it is a practice which should cease. Present the facts and let the voters decide who to vote for.

Why should anyone here care about anything you have to say? Perhaps we should forbid you from posting so that you cannot influence anyone’s opinion.

      <

p>Yes, voters should make up their own minds, but if they are smart enough to do that, they are also smart enough to make up their minds about how much weight to give a particular endorsement.

Although I think comparing ideas and discussing issues from various perspectives (even yours) is far different than the headline grabbing “THE BOSTON GLOBE ENDORSES CANDIDATE X” as if the clouds have parted and God’s voice is proclaiming his backing of someone. I repeat (with emphasis) Who fucking cares who the Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The NYT or any other newspaper is endorsing. Would you care if FOX NEWS endorsed some Republican? I’m sure you wouldn’t but even as a Republican and a FOX NEWS watcher neither would I. It makes headlines around the country when the Chicago Tribune… endorses somebody and I simply think it’s useless.

        <

p>My posts here influence nobody for sure. People read posts here with a starting view and end with the same view. For most, this site is more about venting than learning. I learn something almost every time I view posts here but that’s because I’m so stupid to begin with.

You are arguing that papers should stop endorsing candidates because you think they should just present facts not opinions. If you believe that, then it is inconsistent for you to spout your own opinions here or anywhere else. Opinion pages and blogs are fine places for newspapers and regular citizens to publish their opinions. There is really nothing special about newspapers that they should not publish opinions while the likes of you and I continue to do so.

          <

p>I personally don’t pay much attention to newspaper editorials, but I see no reason that paper’s shouldn’t continue to publish them if they believe it serves the public good or merely serves their own business interests.

I’m sure this story won’t be promoted to the Front page of BlueMass but it’s still news worthy

    <

p>huh? why ever would you be so sure? David, Bob and Charley have not endorsed here — and even in competitive elections where they have endorsed, they’ve always been good at making sure everyone gets a voice.

    <

p>If you wanted this or any of your diaries to be front-paged, perhaps you should have emailed David, Bob or Charley and asked? That’s much more likely to get you front-paged than “I’m sure this story won’t be promoted to the Front page of BlueMass.”

    <

p>By the bye, I find it ironic that they did front-page the actual news item of this diary. David just wrote it as his own diary, coupled with other endorsement news, updating people on the race as a whole. Aaron’s Globe endorsement was given top-billing, the first thing David wrote about in his post. Less astroturfing and snarkiness (this community is not against Aaron… I doubt most people have a position), more community participation. That’s how you build support for your candidate in a blog community.

The guy on michlewitz’ campaign staff who blogs under suffolk democrat may be a democrat, but he clearly doesn’t know how “progressive” ratings work!

p>Zing zing!  I’m here all week, folks.

What, exactly, prompted you to rate my comment a zero? It was constructive criticism. If you take the advice, you’ll be better off if ever you decide to stick around here after Tuesday. I like Aaron, had him on my podcast. Believe it or not, my comment was for your benefit, not actually about the race in general.
