Adam Gaffin at UniversalHub recaps:
WBUR reports that U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano showed the U.S. embassy in Katmandu the stupidity of its ways and that it will issue a visa for Surendra Dangol’s nine-year-old daughter after all.
Dangol, here legally, had been saving money to bring his wife and daughter here when he was murdered at a Tedeschi shop on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain Dec. 26. The embassy had initially refused to issue the girl a visa because it was afraid she and her mother would come here and then not leave.
Earlier, “Police seek getwaway car in Boston murder“,
Boston police searching for the killer of a convenience store clerk are asking the public’s help in identifying a white car seen fleeing from the Jamaica Plain crime scene this weekend.
Police released two images of the white four door sedan, possibly Dodge or Chrysler make, that the shooter got into after attacking the clerk at the Tedeschi’s store Saturday around 3 p.m.
The victim has been identified as Surendra Dangoi, 39, and of Somerville. He was working at the store in the 700 block of Centre Street when he was shot by a man heavily bundled in dark clothing.

I hope the authorities assure us that this man’s family will be returning to Nepal when the ceremonies are completed, like right after they are completed.
<
p>I also hope they find his murderer and put his ass behind bars forever. A guy comes here to work hard and send money back to his family but gets killed by this thug for no reason, no reason at all. The death penalty would be too good for this assassin. Another proud moment for Boston and the wonderful residents who look the other way.

What are you talking about?
<
p>I also don’t know what you are trying to imply about Boston. This is a horrible crime, but I see no embarrassment for Boston here. The Boston police have not dropped the ball here.
<
p>As long as we live in a country in which there are millions of handguns floating around, such crimes can occur in any community including your own. (BTW, while I am generally in favor of stricter gun control laws, I don’t believe that changing them would do much to remove those guns from the streets at this point).

johnd says
It is up to the residents of where crime occurs to turn in the criminals. Don’t you think there are people who know who shot this guy? But they don’t do the right thing.
lightiris says
think your attitudes are bigoted.
<
p>I wonder if you’d have the same urgency to ship back the body of a murdered clerk and the gall to treat his family so shabbily if the victim had been a 6’4″ blue-eyed blond from Norway with a family to match? Somehow I can’t imagine that you’d feel the same urgency to ship the guy’s body back to Norway for burial or that we’d boot the family immediately after–“like right after” the ceremonies are completed.
johnd says
Let’s go your way… a 6’4″ blue-eyed blond from Norway gets killed the same way. OK, WTF wouldn’t we ship his body back to Norway for burial? Why would his family come here instead of him going back to his family? Again, if I died in a foreign country I would want my body shipped back to where my family is. Quite logical!
<
p>And yes, if we had concern about his family staying (like our government officials did have right???), then I would say give them a 7 day visa and then ask them to go back to the country where they came from. Nice attempt to tie my strict view of this situation to bigotry. Please stop hate mongering.
lightiris says
Only responses that you can understand are worthy of respect? The family must justify to your satisfaction why they want to do things they way they want to do them? If you died in a foreign country, your wishes or desires are completely irrelevant. Your hubris is immense.
<
p>Of course you had concerns about the family staying. But, as I suggested, if the family were a Norwegian family, your concerns about their staying would have been, shall we say, probably non-existent because people like Norwegians–they’re pretty with fair skin, blue eyes, and light-colored hair.
<
p>And our government’s bizarre immigration policies don’t really help you much as they are designed out of the same paranoid and bigoted thinking that informs yours.
johnd says
“Class, it’s My way or the highay, eh?

<
p>… then maybe you should contact your good friend Barack Obama, the Democratic Congress or maybe the MA Congressional delegation (including said Mike Capuano) and tell them to change our policies. You and they have the power otherwise grin and bear it…
<
p>As for my comments and inclinations, the world is not an open field with people being able to go from country to country without concern for each country’s security and sovereignty laws. Yes, the family of a foreigner who has come to MY country must justify many things just as I may have to justify many things when I go to THEIR country. Your naivety is immense as well.
<
p>And oh by the way, my strict concerns for illegals has no visual pretense. I don’t care if they are Irish, Norwegian or Mexican, people here illegally (like Obama’s Aunt) should be shipped back to where they came from and stop sucking our country’s wealth and resources.

Michael Capuano, who had the compassion and good sense to do the right thing.

p>Whether this man is buried here (which may have been part of his dream, who knows!) or in Nepal, is immaterial to making sure the bereaved have the opportunity to mourn and bury this poor man.

p>Thank you, Mike, for proving your worth and compassion to your constituency once again.

has been and continues to be a class act. And J4A thanks for actually commenting about the post.

Striker57, there are so many occasions when Democrats are on opposite sides in primaries, but we have a lot of respect fopr the opposing candidates. The Coakley campaign has been very welcoming to me and to others who were on the Capuano campaign. I hope we have a chance to see each other soon. Kate
striker57 says
I was with Martha Coakley not against Mike Capuano. Have a tremendous amount of respect for him and was an active supporter during his primary 11 years ago. And the Coakley campaign is lucky to have you and the solid Capuano supporters on-board.
<
p>I suspect we have more candidates in common than we disagree on Kate. Hope to catch up soon.

He’s a Somerville lad at heart, can’t bear injustice and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Yeah, I can only imagine what the nature of that “enlightenment call” was like. It’s part of his charm.

I would like to hear what he said to the consulate. My conversations with staff at our Beijing embassy were much less productive. The State Department issues and withholds visas based on whim, and cannot be made to justify those decisions. I’ve been told that immunity is built into the Constitution, but I’m not clear why.
<
p>I am impressed that Rep. Capuano was able to persuade the consulate to reverse their decision and do the right thing. Kudos.
