The next step for activists is the local Democratic caucus in your community. The first true test of any Democratic campaign is how much support a candidate can get at the Democratic caucus, where local democrats select delegates to attend the convention in June. The delegates select the candidates that appear on the Democratic ballot in the primary. In order to do this, candidates must get 15% of the vote at the convention.
In an election year (like 2010) delegates to the convention are extremely important to the party. They get the first look at candidates and are responsible for screening out candidates that are not viable. If you would like to take on this responsibility, please run for a delegate slot at your local caucus. If you do not want to be a delegate we still need your help. Please go to a caucus and help elect the delegate that will represent you at the convention.

p>If your town or ward does not have a caucus scheduled, and you want to attend the convention, the Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair, in consultation with district DSC members, can schedule one. This is happening in Western Mass right now.
<
p>Attending the convention, whether as a delegate, an alternate, or volunteer, is a great way to:
– work towards electing Democrats across the state
– meet and network with activists from a wide range of communities
– meet candidates for state wide office, as well as local candidates
– have fun!

A press release promoting a political event is more a wish, than an actual announcement. I’ll believe the “Thousands of delegate” statement when I see it. OTOH, it would be a good thing if the party produced good candidates for all seats, rather than bypassing seats they fear they are uncompetitive in, or putting up Larry, Curley or Moe as cannon fodder just to claim they contested a seat. Also, there is more to participating in state government than putting up celebrity candidates for the governor’s office, and forgetting the grunt work of the legislature. Control the legislature, and you can change the state.

This state would be healthier, politically, if both parties had 100% attendance+ at their conventions in my opinion. But you may well have better attendance than the last few years; hope perhaps increases participation.

I’m actually going to be a delegate.

Many amendments were filed last time, and resolutions. Some passed – and the opposition to Casinos made a giant leap forward in support, too just by connecting to Democrats statewide.
