Today I did my first canvassing of the fall in Chesterfield NH, for President Obama, NH-01 US House candidate Annie Kuster, state senator Molly Kelly, and the four Democrats running for the NH House in district Cheshire-1 (three of whom were part of the same canvass). We got a pep talk from Sen. Kelly before going out. I knocked on 31 doors and met lots of Democrats, one polite Republican, one genuinely undecided voter, and only a few people who didn’t want to talk to me.
I live in Gill MA during the school year, and since 2004 I’ve chosen to do my field work in NH rather than MA. The case for NH having a greater influence on the presidential election and the composition of the US House is still valid, but there is less reason for a Bay Stater to cross the border this year when they can stay home and work for Warren. If you live near the border and would like to work in NH, I’d recommend the websites for the two House races — kusterforcongress.com and www.sheaporter.com — depending on which part of NH you are near. I got a very quick response from the Kuster office in Keene when I volunteered on the web site.
Canvassing is good exercise and more fun than phonebanking. I hope to see you out there!
