If Massachusetts invested in a Monte Carlo/Monaco-like casino location like Marblehead or Nantucket or….Becket or Lenox (sorry relatives), maybe that would be okay with me. It could soak the rich. Imagine a road race through the Berkshires!

Casinos profit from less affluent people who will “play to extinction” who live within 10-30 miles.
People from The Neck aren’t going to get “soaked,” but plenty of residents from Lynn and Salem will.
No casinos in Massachusetts. Period.

…that Lynn and Salem are well outside 30 miles from the Berkshires.

I latched onto the Berkshire reference, but Marblehead of course is within that distance.

However, wealthy and educated patrons are not the demographic that frequent casinos. Monte Carlo is a unique playground for the rich and famous. Las Vegas worked because it was built in the desert not the colonial birthplace of our nation whose Constitution was recently tested and came through with unanimous strength. Massachusetts bad idea – except for the small number of owners/investors or special interests with a stake in fleecing the Commonwealth.

That Lenox and Becket may have some affluent residents and draw a well-heeled tourist crowd, but the median income there’s not that high. Plenty of non-rich people in the area.

I was really only joking about a Monaco-type casino. If we must have casinos, let’s be ambitious! Why compete with Foxwoods? Let’s put ourselves on the world map of destination luxury casinos! If we must have casinos, let’s have ones that James Bond himself could only wish his expense account would cover.
Seriously, it’s indecent to depend on any type of gambling to pay for our common needs. I live in a town of well-heeled residents. It’s basically become a gated community without the gate.
My town shouldn’t take lottery income to support schools. But it’s a heck-of-a good deal for us that we do!
