As of today I am now convinced that three major party candidates will be on the November ballot for the following reasons :
1. Mitt Romney’s devastating take-down of Trump today means that he wants to be drafted at the Republican Convention to be their “savior” nominee just as he had to be drafted to run for Governor to “save” the Massachusetts Republican party.
2. If Romney is drafted to be the Republican nominee, Trump will bolt the party and run as a third party Independent.
3. Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee and will be the beneficiary of the conservative schism within the Republican party thus becoming the 45th President of the United States.

I think what Romney did today was an attempt at a devastating take-down that will not have its desired effect.
Trump has already made his supporters think that Romney is a [insert whatever derogatory term you like] and his speech just seems like whining.
I’m prepared to be dead wrong on this, but I don’t see Romney’s efforts doing much today and I don’t see a draft movement building fast enough to have the desired effect.

There are many Republicans on the fence, ready to vote Trump if they see others jump in Trump’s swamp. Romney’s speech makes it difficult for Republican party regulars to ignore their own conscience – what’s left of it – and rswing in the demagogue’s column.
What we may see next, I hope, is targeted attacks from big name conservatives and centrist Republicans on Christie and the other honchos who stepped up behind Trump.
As in any battle, dispatching traitors loudly and visibly can be very effective to separate the waters and rally the troops.
Make no mistake, unless we speak forcefully, and we’re united, even across party lines if we have to, there’s a significant risk that this little demagogue will become leader of the free world.

Trump will have the nomination locked up fairly soon, at which point I expect Bloomberg will announce as an independent, the establishment GOP will bolt Trump, the unenrolled anti-Hillary votes will move towards Bloomberg and there will an insane campaign where very few states will be considered safe for any of the three. I heard from a consultant friend who said that Bloomberg is still making the rounds among the establishment players, including the consultants and state party leaders and will go into the field with a poll before the end of March.
If Baker, Romney, Lindsey Graham, Wall Street, the GOP’s old foreign policy elites and people of their ilk have a choice between Trump, Hillary or Bloomberg who do you think they will support?
Andrei Radulescu-Banu says
Bloomberg will support Hillary in the general election, last I read.

supporting Hillary. He said he would only run if Bernie and/or Trump is the nominee.

changes in the votes in a few states (more to Wallace) would have put Nixon below 270 and thrown it to the House. Obviously that would be extremely unlikely in 2016, but it’s been that kind of year.
fredrichlariccia says
he will only challenge Trump.

That’s why he’s running, isn’t it? To support Hillary?
It isn’t that clear cut any more. I voted for Anderson in 1980, but I would never vote for Bloomberg, who is even more power-mad than Trump.
merrimackguy says
That was my first vote in a presidential election.

Had the voting age been lower, I might have voted for Nixon
