Pretty much anything about charter schools – or education in any form, really – is absent from these pro-Cheung flyers (both of which arrived in my mailbox today) sent out by Democrats for Education Reform. Curiouser and curiouser…

Men and women, bought and paid for. Not that they’ll even imply that in the literature.

There are plenty of prominent Democrats in office and running for office who have taken a lot more money from the for-profit school crowd, some even served as honorary chancellors for the aforementioned institutions.

The Right has any number of wingnut welfare institutions in which people can cycle from government to the private sector and, to some extent, back. The Left doesn’t have the money to create a parallel welfare system.
Education is one of the areas where Democrats can sell out to the private sector because there is a serious amount of lot money there. I strongly believe there is an elitism at play as well. Many people who start charter schools come from elite backgrounds, and instead of working their way up the ladder of public education with a public school teacher career–they receive CEO status, hobnob with the others of influence, and often pull in good salaries. All the while claiming they do well by doing good. These are people for whom public education is beneath them. Not enough money, not enough status.

at building and supporting enduring institutions.
Not rolling in dough, obviously, but the emphasis on crisis-issue-du-jour organizing on the left has been detrimental.

Didn’t Barack encourage charter schools with his “race to the top” educational initiative?

It’s telling that the pro-charter PAC, on its candidate’s public face, soft peddles charters and education in favor of generic fluff.
They must know its not a winner for them.

it’s about choice, not a child.

Man who wrote this copy? It’s terrible.
Not to mention people in this district are quite happy with their status quo, and know their state senator is fighting for them. It’ll come down to turnout and I hope anyone registered to vote in that district comes out to help.

Any competent campaign pro knows that using the same print format, the same photo, the same font, etc… is an invitation for the recipient to think they have already seen the piece and send it directly to the recycle bin. It is good to know that DFER is oh so non-competent.
