Dr. John, 2007
The music world lost a giant this morning. Various sources report that Mac Rabennack — aka “Dr. John” — died of a heart attack this morning. He had been in poor health for a little over a year.
I know this isn’t political. I’m a piano player, though, and Dr. John has been the center of m music universe for decades.
In one of those curious coincidental quirks, another favorite of mine — Leon Redbone — died at 69 last Thursday.
I’m somehow reminded of the dark fall of 1970, when two of my then-icons — Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin — died within weeks of each other.
Music is your only friend
Until the end.

Music never dies. Sincere sympathy, Tom, for the loss of your friends and inspirations, Dr. John and Leon Redbone. Devoted admirers like you will keep their artistic contributions alive for generations to come.

Funny, every time I listen to or read national or international news, I feel like I live in the right place, but at the wrong time.
My introduction to Dr. John came because my kids liked the them to Curious George,
I also learned that his music that I like the best came when he collaborated with the Meters, who are just fantastic.

Dad’s a huge fan of the Band and we listened to and later watched the Last Waltz together. I was introduced to Dr. John through that wonderful concert film-his portion of which can be viewed here.

Great chorus, great number, great riffs. Thanks for the link.
