Voters went to the polls today in two State Senate districts. In the 2nd Hampshire & Hampden they chose State Representative John Velis to succeed Donald Humason who vacated the seat upon being elected Mayor of Westfield. In the Plymouth & Barnstable they chose Falmouth and Barnstable County official Susan Moran to succeed Vinny deMacedo who resigned to take a position at Bridgewater State University. These are both red-to-blue flips bringing the D-R ratio in the Senate to 36-4.

There is no excuse for a Republican Governor to be leading the policy direction in this state.
Pass everything good you want and then override the veto.

Indeed.
The trouble is, a great many of the “Democrats” in the legislature view our situation through the same lens as Mr. Baker.

I think we’ve all learned that a Dem supermajority is not the same as a progressive supermajority.

Of course, they will both have to start campaigning right away for a full term. I would like to see the state constitution amended to provide that anyone elected to the legislature in a special election during an election year can keep the seat until the NEXT biennial election. IOW, Sens-elect Velis and Moran should not have to run again until 2022 IMO.

Hi, Christopher, new question: when you posted this, did get the news from a phone call, or was a website you checked to find out the results? Special elections pretty much get ignored by the Globe (missed opportunity there to pick up subscribers, I think.)
