Shut down as an entire country for four straight weeks. This is not complicated. We are absurd.
The government needs to pay people, well, to stay home.
I’ve been saying this since March. Unfortunately, in the United States, only a minority of public health officials are saying this.
Why? I cannot possibly tell you. But when you look at the rest of the world, it is not a mystery how to solve this and then go back to work:
YOU STARVE THE VIRUS OF HUMAN HOSTS. Why on earth is it that other countries can understand this and we don’t?
Sheltering in place for four weeks this summer will solve this, and fully, if it is then combined afterwards with testing and tracing. This is true even now in our current state of disaster in the sun belt.
Because of the way we’ve approached this, even places that are doing fairly well like Massachusetts and New York will not want to do this now BECAUSE they are doing well.
What a complete disaster.
Nor am I on the Fauci train. He’s a great man, but he is just not fully leading. He is far too diplomatic. This is not a time for diplomacy.
Our leadership is not only killing people through their failure to shut down nationally, they are also killing our economy, which will kill even more people through lack of medical care for other conditions, and potentially even result in malnourishment and homelessness later.
If we performed a full shut down for four weeks, we would be back at a nearly full economy by September.
I’m not Nostradamus. All we have to do is look across the Atlantic.
But we don’t.
Americans’ famous insularity, in this particular situation, is killing us.
