MLK Day: In spite of all, a window of opportunity

January 18, 2021 By Charley on the MTA

First things first: Don't read me, read MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail, for a poke and prod of motivation. I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years … [Read more...]

Why won’t Charlie Baker sign the climate bill?

January 13, 2021 By Charley on the MTA

UPDATE: Speaker Mariano and Senate President Spilka have indicated that if Baker vetoes, or pocket-vetoes the bill, they're just going to refile it -- and presumably pass it with a veto-proof majority. In other words, Baker might as well … [Read more...]

Ed Markey on yesterday’s attempted coup

January 7, 2021 By Charley on the MTA

I'm glad we kept this guy. It's hard to write about yesterday's events over my overwhelming disgust. What can one say? The clownishness and absurdity of yesterday's desecration doesn't diminish its horror. I think the comparison … [Read more...]

Georgia

January 5, 2021 By Charley on the MTA

Open thread. What’s going to happen? So far looks good ... this feels like one of those creaky wooden roller-coaster rides. Again. The only thing I think I know is this: Stacey Abrams has done it right, and from the ground up, … [Read more...]

The Mariano era begins

January 3, 2021 By Charley on the MTA

Ron Mariano is your new Speaker. This is like the motion of tectonic plates: Things move underground, but nothing changes above. The end of an era. What kind of era -- well, you can describe it yourself. I'd say DeLeo generally did what … [Read more...]

Ron Mariano for Speaker, huh? BMG (and the internet) remembers!

December 17, 2020 By Charley on the MTA

The name "Ron Mariano" and "Capital Grille" are joined in my mind, like "dental plan" and "Lisa needs braces" ... Why? I knew there was something. And friends, this is why we have "institutional memory", so that at the moment of … [Read more...]

Quick hits

December 17, 2020 By Charley on the MTA

Hello everyone. Been a while, since I've been neck-deep in my program at Tufts. My energy class (more on that later) got an extension on a paper,  and it's a snow day, so I'll duck in and highlight a few stories that shouldn't be … [Read more...]

Good luck America.

November 2, 2020 By Charley on the MTA

Well here we go. The clock on the right sidebar has wound down to one day. I've been absent from the site since a.) I'm in school again, getting a mid-career masters at Tufts, and b.) otherwise occupied doing the concert, and phone calls, … [Read more...]

Eviction moratorium has expired; an barbaric act of neglect by DeLeo and Baker

October 18, 2020 By Charley on the MTA

Sorry I've been away ... very busy with the fundraiser. I wish you very best of luck in your activities, busy getting out the vote for November. Nonetheless, I can't turn away from our own, homegrown banality-of-evil political scene … [Read more...]

I support trans rights, yet I can’t help notice the growing and historically new and weird trend of protesting at your statehouse for because of what other state legislatures are doing, things that your legislature is firmly on record being against. #mapoli

SenRobynKennedy @senrobynkennedy

The message is simple: Protect Trans Kids.

We must ensure that our kids feel safe and protected as they pursue a life free of discrimination and danger because of who they are.

Let me just say loud and clear - to transit twitter, to the governor, to the legislature, and everyone else in #mapoli: Transit Matters has been wrong for years in their predictions of what is and is not possible at MBTA.

TransitMatters @transitmatters

"Let me just say loud & clear—to him, to the governor, to the legislature—if [Phil Eng] only has the resources that he has today, he will fail because they're not enough."

Thank you @SenJohnVelis for inviting me to speak with Housing Authorities in your district! #mapoli #bospoli

Senator John Velis @SenJohnVelis

Grateful to my friend and @MA_Senate Housing Chair, @LydiaMEdwards, for taking the time today to meet with Housing Authorities in my district.

We had a productive conversation on how we can improve CHAMP (MA Common Housing Application) and support our Public Housing Authorities.
