Supreme Court: The Spirit of Massachusetts *IS* the Spirit of America

June 29, 2015 By brian 2 Comments

Both the Supreme Court's decisions to approve ObamaCare tax credits and the rejection of state laws banning same-sex marriage take ideas that were first implemented in Massachusetts and make it national law. So now it's official: The Spirit … [Read more...]

GLAD’s Head Talks Marriage News

October 14, 2014 By massmarrier Leave a Comment

Without claim to prophetic insight, divination or any guidance beyond that which is provided to me by some slim knowledge of the actors involved, the stakes at play and the scope of the legal situation (and perhaps more than a little … [Read more...]

Supreme Court’s veneer of intellectual honesty and respectability wears increasingly thin

April 4, 2011 By David 21 Comments

First, the background.  Federal courts are constitutionally limited to adjucating "cases" and "controversies," which over the years has been interpreted to mean that in order to bring suit, the plaintiff must be able to show … [Read more...]

Guns Are People, Too

June 28, 2010 By shiltone 5 Comments

The U.S. Supreme Court, expected to rule narrowly on whether the 2nd Amendment precludes states and municipalities from enacting gun control laws, instead -- by the usual 5-4 majority -- swept away more than a century of precedent and … [Read more...]

Supreme Court decision seems likely to allow DiMasi prosecution to go forward

June 24, 2010 By David 4 Comments

The Supreme Court today narrowed, but did not invalidate, the federal "honest services" law that has been used to prosecute many people charged with public or private corruption, including former House Speaker Sal DiMasi.  The essence … [Read more...]

Rights Under SCOTUS Assault — Again

June 2, 2010 By shiltone 2 Comments

Another example of why you shouldn’t always trust MSM reporting about the Court

May 13, 2010 By David 8 Comments

The first document at this site is a memo to Kagan's then-boss, Justice Thurgood Marshall, recommending that the Court deny review in a particular case.  The way this process works, for background purposes, is basically this: the Court … [Read more...]

Kagan v. Stevens

May 12, 2010 By David 10 Comments

Much has been said about the fact that Elena Kagan doesn't have a huge paper trail.  There's at least one major exception to that: a 141-page behemoth of a law review article, entitled "Presidential Administration."  The article, … [Read more...]

When Scott Brown won in January 2010, Alan Khazei told us, “you can’t read too much into it. It’s a special election!”

Bad result but good to keep in mind.

Looks like JEFF TURCO wins the race to replace former House Speaker Robert DeLeo in the 19th Suffolk District. JUAN PABLO JARAMILLO comes in second by just under 300 votes.

Yikes.

Adam Bass@AdamBassWCCS

The idea of a Pro Life Trump supporter winning Suffolk 19 is not out of the ordinary. Winthrop is particular is much more right leaning that Revere. And Revere got severely out voted. When Capobianco had his story, that left you with two progressives. #mapoli

.@CDCgov dir. @RWalensky, once part of MA's #COVID19 advsy board, said

"Now is not the time to relax the critical safeguards that we know can stop the spread of COVID-19 ... not when we are so close."

But @MassGovernor pushes to reopen.

Who is advising Gov. Baker now?

It's time to state outright that Charlie Baker's science advisory team is the Chamber of Commerce. That's why we were slow to act last year, why our public health network got ignored on vaccines & why our reopenings have flown in the face of data, expert advice & common sense. https://twitter.com/MikeConnollyMA/status/1366423893276303364

Just reiterating my COVID philosophy: Instead of bucking advice from the CDC and Dr. Fauci (by further reopening the Mass. economy), we should #TaxTheRich and use the new revenue to provide cash relief to people in need and small businesses while also investing in health equity.
