Several major networks have informed the United Church of Christ that they are refusing to air the UCC’s new ad, deeming it too "controversial." The ad is designed to convey the highly divisive message that "like Jesus the United Church of Christ seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation."
Oh PUH-LEEZ! You can see the ad here. It starts by showing two bouncers turning away certain people (some of whom may be homosexual) from a church. Then the words "Jesus didn’t turn people away. Neither do we" appear, and then you see a large group of people standing together (again, this group may include homosexuals) with a voice-over saying "no matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you’re welcome here."
Yup, that’s pretty subversive stuff. I sure wouldn’t want my kids accidentally seeing a message of tolerance and inclusiveness while they’re watching "Fear Factor," or hearing a warning on a Cialis ad to avoid four-hour erections.
Particularly astounding is CBS’s stated reason for refusing to air the ad. Even though the ad says nothing at all about gay marriage (or any other "issue," for that matter), CBS points to "the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman" in deeming the ad "unacceptable" for CBS and UPN (which are both owned by Viacom). Ah, I see. So if an ad could conceivably be interpreted as endorsing a point of view contrary to administration policy (even though it doesn’t actually state any such position), it’s too controversial??? What country are we living in, here?
Folks, this is an outrage. Please use the following contact info (courtesy of Daily Kos) to tell these chickenshits that this has got to stop. And we in MA should also contact the local affiliates: channel 4 (CBS), and channel 7 (NBC).
