Some Parting Thoughts

December 19, 2022 By jconway

Thanks again to Joel Patterson for getting me on this site back when his son was a newborn and I was a teenager. Now his son is a teenager and I have a newborn! It’s been a wild ride.

Thanks to Tom for his Davis Sq. Hospitality. Fred, Tommy, Mark Bail, and Terry for helping me find work in politics and Mark and Joel again for valuable advice when I transitioned to teaching.

Thanks to Christopher for being a consistently civil sparring partner even when I wasn’t. And to the editors past and present, but especially Charley for keeping this going.

I’m hoping Pablo and I can convince Greg Dennis and the other ranked choice voting folks to adopt a jungle primary hybrid like Alaska and Nevada have done. It’s the only way it will pass in Mass where the bulk of voters are unaffiliated. I also think it’s the best way we break the fever of extremism, populism, and partisanship destroying our politics.

Keep fighting the good fights everyone. Yes on 1, Yes on 4, and a D trifecta on Beacon Hill will provide us with good things locally and I’m beginning to feel optimistic that Biden can win a second term and the Dems can reclaim the House. Holding onto the Senate will be harder, but that’s what I thought this cycle as well.

Until then have a great holiday season, happy new year, and many happy returns to come.

Please share widely!

Even before these projects, MA was NOT on track to meet Global Warming Solutions Act climate goals. ANY new gas infrastructure was NOT compatible w/ GWSA goals. *Now* MA has more/better env. laws, incl. EJ laws! Unlawful permitting by State agencies don't matter, I guess? #mapoli

@MassGovernor @GBHNews @GreenRootsEJ @XRBoston @SlingshotAction @breathe_ns @MassClimate The big question here: should @massgovernor try to pause or halt fossil-fuel projects that advanced in the Baker years, but still aren't complete?

So far, that's not something she seems inclined to do: https://www.wgbh.org/news/politics/2023/02/02/as-healey-ramps-up-environmental-focus-some-advocates-demand-more #mapoli @gbhnews

Prisoners in Massachusetts may soon be forced to choose between their organs and their freedom: Democratic legislators in the state are proposing a law that would allow prisoners to donate organs or bone marrow to get up to a year off their sentence. https://jacobin.com/2023/02/massachusetts-democrats-prisoner-organ-bone-marrow-donation/

Proud boys held "Free Speech" rallies at the beginning of Trump's presidency; used violence to overturn an election at the end.

Organizing got @massedjustice this far. It's past time for communities like Lawrence and Boston to have true self-determination. Listen to parents, students, educators! Invest in what works, do away with failed strategies. #maedu #mapoli
