Josh Marshall has the full text of the leaked memo from Karl Rove’s deputy regarding the administration’s strategy to destroy Social Security. It’s all scary, but the scariest part is the paragraph on tactics:
Our strategy will probably include speeches early this month to establish an important premise: the current system is heading for an iceberg. The notion that younger workers will receive anything like the benefits they have been promised is fiction, unless significant reforms are undertaken. We need to establish in the public mind a key fiscal fact: right now we are on an unsustainable course. That reality needs to be seared into the public consciousness; it is the pre-condition to authentic reform.
Ah. So we need to "sear into the public consciousness" a "reality" that is, in fact, false. Sounds like Bush administration business as usual. What a sad time this is.
By the way, the good folks at the Daily Howler have done outstanding reporting on Social Security. Read through the archives there for a good sense of how to cut through the phenomenal quantity of misinformation, disinformation, and good old-fashioned bullshit that is floating around on this issue.
