Longtime Boston Globe political columnist David Nyhan died this morning after being rushed to the hospital when he collapsed while shoveling snow. He was 64.
Boy, judging from the headline, i thought the link was going to take me to a funny picture or humorous news story.Sorry guys, that headline was in bad taste

John, I know a lot of the things we write are ironic or funny — this one just wasn’t. I meant the headline in all seriousness. Stuff like this doesn’t have to happen.I wrote “Horrible” instead of “Condolences to the family”, because I doubt that they read the site, frankly. But I hoped that would communicate my feelings about it.

Charle, you have to agree that the headline”don’t let grandpa shovel snow” was in poor taste. It is the headline i have a problem with. I do not understand your point about communicating your feelings. Look at it again. A reasonable person would believe the headline refers to something funny or ironic. You are wrong on this. Not to mention it is very un p.c. because it pokes fun at seniors.C’mon Charley, we all make mistakes.even me, belive it or not.Is an apology coming? A headline respectful of the death of an influential local writer rather then one that looks as if it is poking fun at the cause of his death would have been more appropriate. I think we are in agreement. It is just that your way of expressing it flies over the heads of most, if not all, of your readers.

John, have you talked to “most, if not all”, of our readers?Irony is a tough thing to put across in print. This happened to be a lack of irony that you took as ironic. People have grandparents (and Mr. Nyhan was certainly at a grandfatherly age) that should not be shoveling snow. My father is 72, for instance — and fortunately healthy– he should not be doing it alone. It was timely, local, and meant as a real warning, since I just spent several hours yesterday shoveling. “RIP Nyhan” would have been respectful indeed, but it would not have been immediately relevant to our hordes (hordes, I say!) of readers. That being said, RIP Nyhan.
