Wow. The always provocative Ed Kilgore at New Donkey almost made my head explode today in this post about the intersection of religion and politics in America.
Ed also links to this commentary (LA Times, reg. req’d) by Stephen Prothero of Boston University (ah, there’s the local connection). The last paragraph is the kicker for all politicians and public-minded people: you’ve just got to pick up the Scriptures and read ’em, whether you believe them wholly, partially, or not at all. (Remember Howard Dean saying that his favorite New Testament book was Job? Inexcusable. For all his considerable strengths, that was the moment I thought this guy might be in over his head.)
