This link will take you to an excellent resource for the coming debate on Social Security. (Hat tip: TaxProf via ACSBlog.) The 103-page document was prepared by the Chairs of the House and Senate Republican Conferences, Deborah Pryce and Rick Santorum respectively. It’s chock-full of facts and figures — some accurate and useful, some technically accurate but highly misleading — that you can expect Republicans to toss around every time this subject comes up, as well as "talking points" designed to persuade (or, again, mislead) people into supporting "reform" of Social Security.
So go to the link and read through the document. And as you go, be critical of everything you read, and try to respond with counterpoints and counterexamples that you can throw in the face of your imaginary Republican opponent. Use the document as an exercise to test your understanding of the real issues facing Social Security, and as a way of honing your debating skills on this very important issue. After tonight’s speech, the full-court press begins, and our team needs to be ready.
