Eric Fehrnstrom, Mitt Romney’s "loathsome $150,000-a-year spokesman" (in the words of the late lamented mystery blogger behind Romney is a Fraud), has apparently decided to play the stem cell research issue for straight comedy. Get this – he says that Romney has "a deep and thoughtful understanding of some of the grave ethical issues at stake in this debate." Ha. Haha. Hahaha. Good one, Eric! Please, stop it – you’re killing me! Hahaha!
Seriously, lots of words (such as "wildly unprincipled") spring to mind to describe Romney’s stand on this issue, but "deep" and "thoughtful" aren’t among them. Unless his deep thoughts are about how to win the presidency. But I doubt that’s what Fehrnstrom had in mind.

Not fair (or is it fare?) david. Only because his wife has MS and this research could benefit her. Or am i wrong. Naturally I have not checked it out.

I do consider Romney’s position on stem cell research to be unprincipled, for the reasons set out in my earlier posts. His explanations of it are so incoherent and so devoid of any discernible rationale that to describe his “understanding” of this issue as “deep” or “thoughtful” is, indeed, laughable. His wife’s illness simply has nothing to do with it, in my view (and, to my knowledge, that is not what Fehrnstrom was talking about). It was not, of course, my intention to make any sort of joke at her expense, and if I have been misunderstood in that respect, I apologize for not being clearer. But Romney does not get to pass off his unprincipled position as “deep” because of the illness of a family member – the two are not connected.

(At the risk of sounding like an echo chamber…) Well said, David. All right, I’m going to try something for a little while. Ten minutes reading the Lowell Sun online had me itching to make comments, so I figure that’s a sign of some sort. I spend (waste?) so much time reading and commenting on blogs that I’m sure I must have SOMEthing to say. So I’ve registered a domain and will install some blogging software therein, and let people know when it’s up. I will definitely want feedback from people to see if it’s a worthwhile venture (such as, “you write like a 5th grade hack!” or “the issues you pick are boring and anyway I can read about them elsewhere!”). đŸ™‚
