Brian McGrory asks Rick Santorum’s spokesman about the Senator’s "Boston makes priests rape kids" column:
”It’s an open secret that you have Harvard University and MIT thattend to tilt to the left in terms of academic biases," said RobertTraynham, the Santorum aide. ”I think that’s what the senator wasspeaking to."
Right, "that’s what the senator was speaking to"… that clears everything up, thanks. Now Senator, Mr. Traynham, I think you owe it to us in the Boston area to explain precisely, in detail, exactly how leftward "academic bias" leads directly to "priests raping kids." Come on, out with it.
McGrory also asked local leaders about the column, and gets two decent responses:
[Romney’s] spokeswoman, Julie Teer, called back and said: ”What happenedwith the church sex abuse scandal was a tragedy, but it had nothing todo with geography or the culture of Boston. What we know now is thatthe sex abuse was occurring around the country and around the world.Boston was just the first to find out about it."
Good answer. Then I called Menino, who groaned. ”Typical of the guy who doesn’tunderstand the issue, doesn’t understand the Catholicism. He shouldcome up to Boston and see what it’s all about. Maybe we’ll send awelcome wagon to get him."
Fine, but awfully charitable in general. "Doesn’t understand?" I think we can safely say that that Santorum and his spokesman just like to make stuff up in the sleaziest possible manner.
