Editor & Publisher reported yesterday: "Accompanying her husband, former President George H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, "This is working very well for them."
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this–this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."
The comments were made on National Public Radio’s "Marketplace" program.
UPDATE (by David): Via the Fray, the invaluable Crooks & Liars has the audio.

context, from a diarist on Kos:Reporter: Former First Lady Barbara Bush took note of the mood in the small city that’s formed inside Houston’s Astrodome. She says many simply want to stay put.Babs: What I’m hearing, which is kind of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arenas here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is–this is working very well for them. “

Charley,I’m glad that you added the context, because the line that stood out for me was “which is kind of scary.”

I saw this quote from Babs last night on Countdown with KO. They had a graphic up with the quote, and when they went back to Keith, the look on his face was priceless. The unmitigated arrogance of the Bush dynasty boggles the imagination. If karma is a boomarang, the Bushies better hit the f#$&ing deck.

Seems to me that Georgie and Babs are blowing any chance Jeb will run for president in the next 40 years or so…
