Republicans continue to desert the President. This excellent article by Doug Bandow, a former Reagan aide and senior fellow at the Cato Institute, asks "is George W. Bush a serious person?" Bandow recognizes that the administration’s response to Katrina is of a piece with its execution of the Iraq war: in both cases, "the administration underestimated the problem, failed to plan for the predictable aftermath and refused to accept responsibility for its actions." Bandow concludes that Bush’s "failures now overwhelm his successes. The administration’s continuing lack of accountability leaves it ill-equipped to meet equally serious future challenges sure to face the US and the rest of the world."

David, I wouldn’t count Bandow among the new abandoners. He’s an honest libertarian who argues against corporate welfare like the Import/Export Bank or whatever it’s called. He wrote several pieces for Salon and basically said that conservatives could not support Bush’s re-election.

well, even if he hasn’t just recently “abandoned” Bush, it’s wonderful that conservatives like him are speaking their minds, especially under the banner of the Cato Institute.
