So says one of the strategists working with the White House to shepherd the Harriet Miers Supreme Court nomination through the Senate, as reported by Byron York on the National Review’s web site. York spoke to several of these sources. Here’s some more of what they had to say:
- "The meetings with the senators are going terribly. On a scale of one to 100, they are in negative territory. "
- "Obviously the smart thing to do would be to withdraw the nomination and have a do-over as soon as possible."
- "As of this morning, there is a sort of pig-headed resolve to press forward."
- "Every time I try to accommodate myself to this nomination, folks at the White House say idiotic things that piss me off, like that spin on Rove’s part about her supposed deep involvement in judicial selection for three years, which is just not accurate."
- "In the early days, there were people on the call who tried to give facile defenses of Miers, and they were immediately shot down."
- "We’re in the various stages of grief."
Holy shit. Remember, these are conservative strategists supposedly working with the White House, talking to a conservative reporter for a conservative publication. These guys are so pissed, in fact, that this fake graphic appears on the National Review site (click to enlarge):
It’s getting seriously ugly out there.

I really haven’t seen this written (I’m sure it has) but after the Right sinks their own nominee, it will give the left a blank check to kill the next nominee. The right has fallen off their high and mighty horse about how bad the left is for rejecting a SCOTUS nominee for ideological reasons. So after the knock off Miers, they’ll look like the hypocrites they are when we object to a nominee that passes their litmus test.
