A bittersweet day when we can applaud victory over Presidential opposition to legislation that forbids torture. The Associated Press reports that Bush has dropped his opposition to McCain’s call for a law banning cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment of foreign suspects in the war on terror. The administration, led by Vice-President Cheney, had strenuously opposed the legislation and attempted, as a last-ditch fallback, to preserve the right for CIA agents to torture suspects. The Guardian has published six accounts by people who say they were subjected to tortures organized by the U.S.
