This morning on Meet the Press,
Tim Russert showed some barely-concealed anger about the way that the
federal government has completely forsaken the city of New Orleans,
mentioning a number of articles about the pathetic state of affairs.
The Washington Post’s Mike Allen said that President Bush has not
visited New Orleans since October 11. So much for doing “whatever it
takes”. Or maybe Bush thinks it “takes” a lot of contractual looting.
Doesn’t this country begin to feel more Soviet all the time? As if
public opinion — or even more important, the public well-being —
simply counts for squat? That we all serve the needs of a privileged
few, instead of the other way around? That the concerns of people who
don’t have millions or billions of dollars in business don’t just have
a diluted or under-represented voice in the halls of power — but in
fact that they have *no influence* whatsoever?
Mr. Russert: Please, please, please, keep it up. Stay on this. In this
case, anger is the only reasonable reaction.
