James W. Rappaport, the wealthy former chair of the state Republican party who ran against Kerry Healey for the honor of being Mitt Romney’s 2002 running mate, has been ordered to pay a record $60,000 fine for campaign finance violations. Rappaport won the backing of the state party for Lt. Gov., but Healey won the primary on the strength of Romney’s endorsement.
Rich folk can underwrite their own campaigns, but they have to be up-front about it. That was Rappaport’s mistake: he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own money on his campaign without disclosing that he was doing so.
Just when you thought the Republicans in this state couldn’t get any more pathetic …
