Third, the illegal strike disproportionately hurt the poorest and least well off. Transit workers are reasonably paid relative to most people in New York, and well off compared to many, including for example police, especially when job security and benefits are considered. More to the point, those with the fewest economic options are most dependent on public transportation.
Privatization, limited or complete, of the MBTA and the New York transit system should be considered because it might be an improvement. The privately owned transit system in Hong Kong, for example, is significantly better, in the judgment of some, than the Boston system.

from what I’ve heard, is not truly private. It’s an interesting quasi-public, quasi-private authority, with stockholders and such. A full privatization would just create a less accountable, more complacent and terrible system. Split up the system into many segments, contract them out, and you’ll have a much cheaper, more competitive and efficient system.
