BOSTON –Chris Gabrieli, widely speculated as Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Reilly’s running mate this fall, announced Sunday that we would not run for lieutenant governor.

“I have decided not to run for Lt. Gov.,” Gabrieli said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press Sunday night.
Gabrieli, a millionaire investment banker who failed in a 2002 bid for lieutenant governor, is currently the co-founder and chairman of the Massachusetts 2020 Foundation, which works on expanding educational and economic opportunities for the state’s citizens. He said he will continue in his current position.
Rumors that Reilly, the attorney general, was courting the millionaire businessman upset other lieutenant governor hopefuls.
Gabrieli acknowledged in his statement Sunday that he had spoken to Reilly.
“The Attorney General did ask me to consider … (being) part of a ticket,” wrote Gabrieli, who declined to comment beyond his written statement. “But those discussions, though extensive, serious and productive, never turned into a formal offer to ticket.”
