This is a disgusting piece from Jacoby. But if John Kerry had not let Bush get away with smearing Massachusetts during the election in 2004, it would have been far less possibile for Jacoby to even think of trying to publish this turd.
His “surmises” are true hoots. I’m a bit insulted that he throws this crap against the wall without any scholarship or intellectual effort. You’d think that the token reactionary on the Globe would try harder.

Yes, yes, as always, Jacoby’s leaps of logic are pathetic. This time, he makes no attempt to show cause and effect. In fact, if timing is the only criterion, you can say that all these trends relate to Republican governors. Hmmm.

The beauty though is that he dismisses out of hand the likely causes, at the beginning of the column. What was lacking was an early disclaimer that unless you wanted to enter his fantasy world, you needn’t read further.

Why does Mass have such a high cost of living? Because people want to live here – as the bluest of the blue states, quality of life here is superb (e.g., http://blueworksbetter.com/RedVsBlue ). The demand for housing in our great state caused housing prices to be bid up to ridiculous levels (although they’re starting to correct now).

What I really found disgusting about Jacoby’s column was his framing of certain ideas as poisonous, out-of-touch with the rest of the country, subject to ridicule, as though they belonged in a freak show.

He made it sound like there shouldn’t even have been a debate on whether illegal aliens should get in-state tuition rates — without even acknowledging the fact that if it is federal policy to not absolutely eliminate illegals from this country, making it difficult for those who want an education makes them a complete drag on our state.

That is the danger of columns like his. When every issue is framed so that only the conservative position is correct, no one but conservatives can be correct. That results in more and more people who worship at the altar of Michael Savage, people who believe that any ideas other than their own are mental illnesses.

Also, wasn’t TEXAS the first state to allow in-state tuition for illegal aliens?

I know a handful of people who have left Mass. in the last three years and they all left for the same reason–they couldn’t afford to buy a house here.

If Jeff thinks people are leaving Mass. because of all the liberals here, that would mean that it’s only conservatives leaving and that’s just plain not true.

Jeff, put down the crackpipe. And if you’re interested in leaving, I’ll personally kick in some cash for your moving expenses to Utah. Bring Mitt with you.

I’ll never understand why people who hate Massachusetts insist on living here. 95 goes both ways my friend.

sounds like Jeff took a “bad trip down the ladder.” Now if only he’d take one down 95.
Frankly, I was shocked that an article like this could even be published. What an awful article, making ridiculous statements with nothing to back them up.

That was one of the worst columns I’ve ever read. People are leaving MA because Ted Kennedy is our Senator? BWAAAHAHAHAHA.

So when can we expect Jeff Jacoby to leave? I’d be happy to organize the going-away party.

I can’t promise Jeff will be invited to it, but we’ll have a heckuva good time.

People are leaving Massachusetts because Boston, the Commonwealth’s major magnet, has the highest cost of living in the nation (e.g., http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2005/09/08/report_rates_boston_most_expensive_city/ )
