I took a brief look at Denise Provost‘s and Elizabeth Moroney‘s campaign contributions through December 23, in the reports both candidates filed with the state this week.
The Moroney report shows 119 contributors, only 9 of whom have Somerville addresses: William A. Carito, Helen Corrigan (head of the Democratic City Committee), Dorothy Kelly Gay (former mayor), Melissa Kogut, John M. Lister, Joe Mackey (former state rep, and recent candidate for state senate), James McCallum, Elizabeth Moroney, and Kevin Prior (head of the city Planning Board). Twenty are from labor unions, and five are from campaign committees of other candidates.
The Provost report shows 86 contributors, 66 of whom have a Somerville address. [Full disclosure: I’m one of these.] Five of the others are from labor unions, and none are from other candidates’ campaign committees.

This also goes with the fact that, as far as I can tell, no current elected Somerville official is endorsing Moroney. In contrast, both the current state rep (Carl Sciortino) and state senator (Pat Jehlen) are endorsing Provost, as are two members of the board of aldermen and three school committee members. Moroney’s local ties just aren’t what Provost’s are.

The Bay State Stonewall Democrats endorsed Moroney not Provost.

Both candidates are claiming this organization’s endorsement on their respective web sites. At least one of them’s wrong, don’t know who.

I ran into state rep. Carl Sciortino at Denise Provost’s victory party tonight. He reads this blog even though he doesn’t post here. He informed me that the Bay State Stonewall Democrats had endorsed both Moroney and Provost.
