The wires are reporting that disgraced, disgusting, and despicable House Majority Leader Tom Delay will officially step down from his leadership post.

Yesterday, House Republicans of various leanings circulated a “Dear Colleague” petition calling for new leadership elections. The anti-Delay coalition included Northeast moderates (Shays, Bass, Hart, etc.) who fear Delay’s drag on their elections and members of the (far, far, far) extreme Right Republican Study Committee (Flake, etc.)
The crystal ball is pretty fuzzy about where this one is going. A friend on the Hill said he would guess (acting majority leader) Roy Blount, but also said there’s a fear within the Republican Conference that the election of any leader connected to Abramoff could be the last straw with voters come November. I’d expect a lesser known candidate from the RSC, which claims to be the “majority of the majoirty,” to take a serious run at the post.
