Gossip from the Boston Herald about unopposed candidate Anthony Galluccio:
‘Crash,’ the sequel
Senate President Robert Travaglini (D-E. Boston) has thrown his support behind Cambridge City Councilor Anthony Galluccio, who is running unopposed for the seat being vacated by Sen. Barrios.
Trav recently showed up at a packed fund-raiser for the ex-Cambridge mayor at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and the pair have donated to each otherâs campaigns.
But the Senate prez, who has a no-nonsense reputation, couldnât have been too pleased when he read last week that Galluccio had a 1984 DWI and a 1985 theft case wiped from his criminal record in 1993 by ex-Gov. William Weld. Or that Galluccioâs under investigation for allegedly being drunk during a 2 a.m. car wreck in December.
Friends donât let friends run for office while running from drunken-driving charges.

Just to repeat another comment I made.

Chris Schiavone can walk into this seat. Many factors in his favor. No incumbant, unlike rep seat. He has bigger progressive base in senate district then in rep district. Progressives aren’t completely comfortable with Gallucio and most will jump to Schiavone when they get inside voting booth. Because he has organization from rep campaign he can easily switch gears and deliver same message. (Check out his web site)He can raise money.
He has nice Itlian name. Revere, Everett, saugus is mainly Italian. Huge Italian population actually. Very important!
<
p>
Also, because of above he can clear the decks from other potential candidates. Schiavone v. Gallucio.
One thing is for sure. He won’t get trounced and will probably win.
<

If he runs against O’Flaherty he will get trounced. Nothing against him, just the nature of the district and O’Flaherty’s stronghold. Even with his recent troubles O’Flaherty still owns his seat and can get 4000 people out to vote for him on primary day. Not bad when only 5000 vote.

Well, you are quite right that Schiavone may be whistling in the wind to take on O’Flaherty. O’Flaherty will fight to keep his seat — and fight hard. While anything can happen, (for example, O’Flaherty could get hit by a car or get a great job in DC) Schiavone is wiser to seek the Senate seat if he hopes to actually serve.
<

Beating Galluccio will not be easy for Schiavone, however. Faced with an out-of-town Italian pol from Cambridge with a possible drinking problem or a uber-progressive Italian political newcomer from Charlestown, it’s not easy to say where the voters of Everett, Saugus, Revere, Allston, and Somerville end up going.
<
p>
Still, a Schiavone senate candidacy would be very helpful even if it he doesn’t win. Schiavone would play best in the Cambridge liberal heartland, where Galluccio is actually weakest (he lost there to both Wolf and Barrios by 2 to 1 in past elections). Galluccio is determined to do a lot better in his hometown this time. A Schiavone candidacy pushes Galluccio to be a better progressive. And that helps no matter who wins.

Ernie: what happens when the old Italian ladies discover Schiavone was thrown out of the priesthood because of relations with male seminarians (boys?) and was admitted to a mental hospital after a breakdown? Schiavone is a PhD holding creep who may fool some people but not all. Just ask the female tenant of his who has endured a horror show from him and his partner.

What about convincing Rep. Alice Wolf to run? Surely she was afraid of a hard battle with Galluccio–now its much easier for her.

Do any of the other Cambridge councilors live in the seat? Henrietta Davis? Brian Murphy? SOMEONE PLEASE RUN!! This is JARRETT BARRIOS’S SEAT–Lets keep it PROGRESSIVE!!

I believe Alice may appear like an opportunist taken advantage of her neighbor Gallucio’s problems. I maybe wrong, but many of “her people” have committed to Gallucio and may not appreciate that.
This District is much larger then 1/2 of cambridge and a small chunk of Somerville.
It is going to be won in Charlestown Chelsea and Everett, more then half the district. Revere and saugus are tiny slivers. Barrios won because Galluciom and an Italian city councillor from Everett split the vote.
This is different.

We Need Schiavone.
<
p>
He does not have a record which can be attacked. He can do well in Everett. He will get his vote in Cambridge. He will recieve votes in Charlestown and even a few in Chelsea. Right now Schiavone can win. A liberal Cambridge democrat with a voting record is not what Everett voters want.
<
p>
And he can’t even come close in rep’s race. It just makes sense for progressives and Schiavone for him to run for the Senate.
drgonzo says
I don’t think Rep. Wolf would look like an opportunist, she’s well-loved by progressives and has been around for quite a while.

Politicians also have personal motivations behind running or not — Rep. Wolf is old and may not want the burden of running in and representing an entire state senate district. It’s a lot of work.

When he started to change the largest country in the world in 1978. And a heavy smoker to boot. I don’t think age alone, or work, should deter Rep. Wolf.

Alice may not live to see her term out. Sorry for the harshness dudes but it’s the truth.
