After a long-drawn out debate between David and me, and a few others, over the nature of sports I have decided to take the community’s pulse on this burning issue. (Click on Discuss to take the poll). To the Massachusetts youth who may be reading this blog, the basic lesson here is: don’t go to Law School, it will destroy your mind and ruin your sense of humor.

not the question, but the calculations.

The per cents add up to 100, as if they are mutually exclusive. They’re not.
<

Each per cent should be the number of votes for that choice, divided by total number of votes.

And no whining about “that’s how the poll code works and I can’t change it” please. đŸ˜€

Hear that Soapblox? Your poll software code sucks, and I can’t change it.

My list for what makes a real sport:
<
p>
1) The possibility of a naturally decided winner. This requires the winner of the competition to have won in some objective fashion (scored points, placed an object within a specified area, etc.).
<
p>
2) Contains a set of rules to be followed by participants. Complete anarchy in an activity means that competition is impossible, so some sort of rule structure needs to be in place.
<
p>
3) Some minimum level of physical exertion. It seems like playing cards, or figuring out a crossword puzzle, is a game, not a sport. A sport should have some physical activity tied to it. I know drawing the line at how much activity is necessary is unclear, but it needs to be drawn.
<
p>
4) Done in the spirit of competition and for entertainment. This excludes non-competitive activity as well as participating in war.

Also, I do agree with you re: what law school does to you. It happened to me!
