The Globe has a doozy today: “GOP bid to shore up ethics seems to lose momentum.”. Now, there’s a shocker, seeing as the effort is spearheaded by new Majority Leader John Boehner, who thought it was a good idea to pass out tobacco bribes (of the legal sort, apparently) on the House floor a few years back.
I immediately thought of another classic headline, from The Onion’s book Our Dumb Century, from the 1993 page: “L.A. Gangs’ ‘Increase the Peace’ Movement Least Successful Movement Ever'”. Pretty much. How much interest in reform does the DeLay Party have? They are a looting machine for special interests — and they’re supposed to police themselves? It’s like asking a shark to go vegan.
What a nice opportunity for Democrats to contrast themselves politically, and act in their own interests by moving to destroy a game that is set up for them to lose. I’m not one for partisanship for its own sake, but in this case it really is the best, most powerful and appropriate tool for reform. Vote the bums out.
