The Lowell Sun has an amusing write-up of what sounds like a pretty embarrassing night for Republican Lt. Gov. candidate Reed Hillman. Hillman, says the Sun, “appeared to stumble on several questions.” After Hillman high-tailed it out of there, state Senator Robert Hargraves (R-Groton) was left to clean up the mess:
Hargraves addressed the group after Hillman left the event at the Groton Senior Center. “If it appeared he didn’t directly answer your questions, it’s because he is not here to make policy for the new administration,” Hargraves said. “If he was running for governor it would have been entirely different.”
Hoo boy, where to begin with that one? “Entirely different” – like maybe he would have known what he was talking about? “Entirely different” – like maybe he might have given a few moments’ thought to some of the more pressing issues facing the Commonwealth? The Lt. Gov. is, after all, a “heartbeat away” from the Governor’s office, so it doesn’t seem too much to ask for him to be at least vaguely conversant with the issues of the day. Why is this guy running, again?
Let’s also note for the record that the Democratic candidates for Lieutenant Governor don’t seem to have had any trouble taking positions on important policy issues. And let’s leave it with a link to Kerry Healey’s (and, oddly, Scott Harshbarger’s) defense of Hillman’s misguided effort to secure a pardon for a repeat drunk driver/cop assaulter. Talk about strange bedfellows.
