The Globe is reporting that Mihos has decided to run as an independent…
Is this for real … or is this a trial balloon meant to scare Kerry Healey into offering him something more???
If it’s for real, any chance the Democratic nominee, whoever it is, loses this one? Any chance at all?
And if there isn’t a chance the Democrat, whoever they are, will lose, shouldn’t we pick the one our hearts tell us to pick, not some silly question of “electability”???
Please share widely!

That sound you heard was Kerry Healey crying. This has to all but lock it up, there will be a Dem in the corner office come November!
publius says
November is an eternity away. We have no idea what scandals, controversies, or gaffes await. No champagne corks just yet.
afertig says
Funny, they said that Reilly was a lock up for the Democratic primary, too. Focus on running the best campaign, listening to the people and putting forth a good vision of government.
mike-corleone says
I do not agree that a Democrat in the corner office is imminent. Massachusetts still has a stong and growing undercurrent of people who are still more fiscally conservative and are in stark disagreement with the liberal benefit granting state legislature.
<
p>
Botton line, it’s too early. Lets see how this race shapes up. You already have one Democrat (Reilly) who has had a major blunder in his campaign. Let’s see how Patrick, Healy, and now, Mihos hold up under pressure in the days and months to come.
sco says
This news is less good news for Democrats as it is bad news for Kerry Healey. If you’re one to celebrate schadenfreude, then you’re welcome to it, but don’t print up the invitations to the inaugural ball just yet.
<
p>
That said, if these fiscal conservatives who can’t bring themselves to vote Dem now spread their votes between two candidates, rather than one, well, it certainly makes the Democrat’s job a little easier.
rex says
You know, I think this is great for the Democrats.
<
p>
However, what happens if Reilly beats Patrick? It seems to me that many Democrats who are true Patrick supporters will have a hard time pulling the lever for Reilly.
<
p>
Also, the Patrick supporters who are ABR’s ( anyone but Reilly) might vote for Mihos.
<
p>
Then again, if Patrick beats Reilly, many conservative Dems might not want to vote for Patrick.
<
p>
Thus it is not bad plan for a rich, egomanic like Mihos.
<
p>
My predictions, just for fun
<
p>
Patrick: 43%
Healey: 35%
Mihos: 20%
Others: 2%
<
p>
or
<
p>
Reilly: 45%
Healey: 37%
Mihos: 16%
Others: 2%
<
p>
(Yes, I think Patrick supporters will be loyal to the party if Reilly is the nominee.)
migraine says
For starters, I am a good Democrat.
<

BUT
<
p>
If Reilly wins the primary I’m voting for Mihos. If Patrick wins the primary I’m voting for Patrick. I won’t vote for an insider establishment Dem like Reilly. I have bunches of reasons but not the time to go into it now. I just wanted to say that I believe Patrick supporters will not cast an establishment vote… sure most will but Mihos will benefit from a Reilly victory in the primary.
afertig says
That’s curious to me. I’m a strong Deval supporter, but if Reilly wins the primary I will work hard for him, too. It makes little sense to support somebody who is farther from my ideals just because they aren’t part of the “establishment.” As far as I’m concerned, Mihos is a rich businessman, Lt. Gov. Healy is, well, Lt. Governor and as such is “inside,” Reilly is Attorney General, and Deval Patrick is another businessman who was also part of the Clinton Administration. They’re all pretty well established in the world, and I don’t really see that being outside of the “political establishment” will make a candidate better or worse. They still are at the top of society.
<
p>
What exactly is the big deal about being part of the “establishment” — all are to some degree.
<
p>
That’s why it’s so important to focus on the issues — who has the best vision of government and will do right by the rest of society? As far as I can tell, Reilly is still more sensitive to the poor and not well off than Mihos. I vote values and issues, not labels.
greg says
If Patrick wins the nomination, I wouldn’t be so positive that Mihos hurts Healey more. Yes, Mihos is closer to Healey on the issues, but many people don’t pay too much attention to issues or ideology. If you look at the spectrum not as left vs. right but insider vs outsider, you may find Patrick and Mihos fighting over the “outsider” vote. In the end, my best guess is he’ll draw from both candidates equally.
patrick-hart says
I agree with some of the other posters who are reminding us all to stay on our game. Remember that last time Romney drew votes from suburban independents (and some Dems) in 128-495 belt who were socially liberal but fiscally conservative. Mihos could draw more of those voters (since he appears to actually BE socially liberal), especially if the nominee is Reilly, a party insider who suburban voters may associate with cronyism and Beacon Hill politics that they don’t like.
This is all conjecture, of course, and it does seem that Mihos’ entry helps us more than it hurts us, but we have to stay focused.
pmbakid says
I am a dedicated, dyed in the wool Deval Patrick supporter, but it grieves me to hear anyone say they’d support Christy Mihos over Tom Reilly. PUHLEESE people! Don’t let these idiots convince you that because they run as “independents” that it means they’ll listen. This guy is a loose cannon. He’s on an ego trip and he could pull down the entire Commonwealth with him.
<
p>
Let’s make sure we get DP elected, but if that isn’t in our stars, Tom Reilly is still a good Democrat, and that’s ALL that matters. Our recent debacle with healthcare reform shows we can’t trust the Legislature. Only when we hold the Executive branch can we start to kick some butt.
tc says
that the odds of Mihos surviving until November are only one in four given his propensity for making “unusual” statements – see today’s Globe.
merbex says
What does it say about him that he even thought those were amusing?
He strikes me as someone who is stubborn and one who does not take criticism well- the classic phrase teachers use in the comment section: He does not play well with others.
Another one: Christy needs to control his outbursts,he is disruptive to the class.
I can only imagine his “advisors” today telling him no more jokes, or clear the jokes with us first. It isn’t going to happen. We are looking at the definition of a loose cannon.
I hope the Democrats just stick to their message and paint both Healey and Mihos with the Katrina culture of government:all style no substance.
The people of this Commonwealth deserve better than dillentantes running their government.

focused on Mihos and Healy instead of Patrick and Reilly.

Patrick desperately needs name recognition and based on the free attention Mihos will get as a maverick candidate , Patrick will now have to pay more for his own media time.
<
p>
He is basically shown all his cards on issues , raise taxes etc. and he has no money because he spends it as fast as it comes in on experts, staff, media consultants etc. He is not a happy camper right now now nomatter what his supporters may think, he has no money.Pissed it away , as they say. Yeah the progressives love him but the smart money dems understand that he will get crushed in the general election.
<
p>
Reilly still has tremendous favorabity ratings among the voters even post Le Fleur a 90% name recognition and the AG’s office churning out press releases everyday is a unique advantage ..
polk says
My property taxes have gone up with annual 5-10% overrides the last 4 years … and that’s all school related because of the cutbacks in aid at the state level…
<

Reilly wants to cut my taxes? Great! Cut my property taxes!
<
p>
At least Deval understands that cities and towns need real tax relief … instead of fake promises to lower taxes.
<

How’s that wonderful education plan Reilly supports going to happen when he drains the state of tax revenue?
michael-forbes-wilcox says
As far as I’m concerned, Patrick is going to be our next Governor no matter how many or how few candidates there are in the race.

Patrick has the message that Massachusetts voters want to hear.
<
p>
And, as Deval likes to remind us, “let’s stop talking about HOW we’re going to win elections, and let’s start talking about WHY we should win!”
<
p>
I’m supporting Deval Patrick because he’s the best candidate to come down the Pike for a long, long time, and I’m doing everything I can to get his vision in front of as many people as I can. To me, voter turnout in the Primary is the key. When people show up and vote for our candidate, and he wins, they will have a stake in showing up again in November to be sure he wins again.
<

I think it’s shaping up to be a very fun campaign season!
