AP is reporting that US Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Somerville) is set to endorse Deval Patrick’s campaign for Governor tomorrow afternoon.
Interesting. I don’t know whether Capuano and Tom Reilly have any history (I assume that Capuano and Patrick don’t, but I could be wrong about that). Capuano is the second member of the MA congressional delegation to endorse Patrick (Jim McGovern was the first). Reilly appears to have Marty Meehan and Richard Neal in his corner (based on a writeup of his kickoff event – there’s no list of endorsements on Reilly’s website that I could find). The rest of the gang has, as far as I know, not yet taken a position.
Thoughts on whether endorsements from congressmen matter?

and I’d guess this one, not so much. Capuano seems to be well-liked, but he’s not iconic, like Meehan, Frank, or Markey.

And it also depends how much behind-the-scenes help he’s willing to give: connections, voter lists, etc.

I would guess that Capuano’s hearing support for Patrick among the activists in his (very liberal) district. So it’s a matter of following, not so much leading the pack.

Speaking for myself, I was very impressed by Congressman Jim McGovern’s endorsement of Deval Patrick. I put great stock in my congressman’s opinion. I was, and continue to be, impressed with the work that he is doing for Patrick. There were many factors that went into my decision to endorse Deval Patrick myself, and I consider Congressman McGovern’s support to be a major factor.

I’ve voted for Mike in the past but not anymore. He forgot there are some moderate to conservative Democrats left in his district and he only caters to the left-wingers who should move to China and take up farm collectivism. Capuano is also portrayed as a man of his word – baloney. He told Alderman Sean O’Donovan in Somerville trhat he was staying out of the recent local race there; and then he endorsed his opponent. He doesn’t like people to know he’s screwing them, he hides it and creates an image of “I’m a tough guy and I went to Dartmouth.” When he was growing up in Somerville he’d be the 1st to run and go home for mama’s meatballs. If the Democrats keep doing what they’re doing, the Republicans will take the corner office once again. Capuano-the emperor has no clothes.

If you knew Capuano was such a momma’s boy growing up, then why would you vote for him in the first place?

Being a “momma’s boy” certainly does not disqualify anyone for anything. There are so many of them.

Not keeping your word to other politicians does.

And portraying yourself as a tough street kid when the tough street kids in the neighborhood knew you were not just helps one form an opinion that Capuano can’t be trusted.

Capuano has a chip on his shoulder.

Well, I’ll leave the “Inside Somerville” stuff to those who care about that stuff. I was simply trying to see if the personal history really mattered to the previous commenter in a substantive sense.

I did not know anything about Capuano before the Murtha controversy about withdrawal from Iraq last November. Capuano was one of only six congressmen who had the brains to vote “present” when the Republicans staged the sham vote over immediate withdrawal. The “icons” of the Mass. delegation did not seem to have the same kind of parliamentary wherewithall.

I don’t know Somerville inside stuff either. My remarks were just conclusions based on the facts given by John Galway.

But does anyone know if the Capuano event is still on for tonight? It is the domestic surveillance thing, with the ACLU, in Cambridge.

There was a calendar entry for it, but it isn’t there now. Does that mean it is off–or is it just a feature of the calendar program?
david says
Sorry about that. Here is the info. I’m not sure why the calendar is dropping events on the day they occur – will look into it.
mem-from-somerville says
Thought that might be the case. I’ll plan better and print up the stuff ahead of time for now….
