Preview of news from the Berkshires

March 17, 2006 By michael-forbes-wilcox

Keep your eyes peeled. I’m told there will be a story in tomorrow’s Berkshire Eagle that will foreshadow a major shakeup in the political scene here in Berkshire County.

Sen. Nuciforo has announced he will not seek re-election.

I’ve talk to a lot of people and NO one saw this coming or has any idea what Nuciforo is thinking.  The decision to run for Registrar is even more mind boggling.  Maybe the commute IS that annoying?

Senate = long commute, and some actual hard work.  Register of Deeds = easy job, near home, big salary, essentially lifetime appointment.  Makes sense to me.

Sen Nuciforo has long been thought to be coveting/eyeing/drooling over Rep. John W. Olver’s congressional seat.  However, this move doesn’t seem to fit that calculus at all.  While Registrar means better pay and less challenges, it also has a much smaller upside for when it comes to advancement.

Maybe Nuciforo thinks Olver will stay until the 2010 census redistricting, when conventional wisdom says MA will lose a seat, and the 1st and 2nd district, may be, for all intents and purposes, merged.  Still, its an odd, unexpected move to say the least.

I know a Registrar of Deeds, and he works very hard!

I don’t doubt though that someone inclined to could turn it the job into a cushy easy one though…
