The Somerville News reports that Alderman Dennis Sullivan of East Somerville has announced that he will run for the state Senate seat being vacated by Jarrett Barrios. The News item doesn’t specify whether Sullivan is running in the Democratic primary against Anthony Galluccio.
Any of you Somerville denizens know anything about Mr. Sullivan?

But he has some catching up to do. Barrios’s Senate district only has two wards (or is precincts?) in Somerville (2-4, 1-1), and I would suspect most of the voters come from Everett and Chelsea. I wish there was another Latino running from Chelsea, because if I remember correctly, the Latino vote (and increased turnout) was part of the reason Barrios won against Galluccio in 2002.

As I’ve heard it, Galluccio has been campaigning for a year. Drunk driving or no drunk driving, it’s still a primary and it’s going to be pretty hard for anyone to catch up with him in terms of money or support.

1-1 and 2-1. Somerville has seven wards, each of which is divided into three precincts. So this Senate district contains two precincts out of Somerville’s 21. The precincts cover part of East Somerville and part of Union Square.

The Somerville News reports that Alderman at-Large Bruce Desmond pulled papers for Middlesex County Clerk of Courts, a race in which it seems he will face Cambridge City Councilor and former mayor Michael Sullivan.

I don’t know much about Dennis Sullivan, but I heard good things about him from Jesse Kanson-Benanav of PDC. The PDS monthly meeting is this evening, so that could be a good place to ask about people’s impressions of him.

Has anyone heard anything new about other Cambridge City Councilors getting in the race? I still hear whispers of Councilors Marjorie Decker and/or Brian Murphy getting into this race, especially with the possibility that Anthony Galluccio may not be able to stay in it–but my sources don’t have any inside scoop, just speculation. Can anyone back this up or get more info?

Saw Marjorie Decker at an event and she said “I was running before, but I have to concentrate on school” (or something very much like that; she goes to the Kennedy School). As for Brian Murphy .. haven’t heard anything, but I highly doubt it. The race is definitely Galluccio’s to lose and I don’t think the city councilors want to leave their cushy highly paid jobs.
