With all the talk ’round here of the Koufax Awards (and Blue Mass. Group’s place in the final round thereof – go vote if you haven’t already), it seems appropriate to mention another set of blog awards that were recently announced: the Bloggies. They’re not limited to politics like the Koufax awards are – there are tons of different categories and some incredibly interesting blogs among the winners and finalists.
This year’s overall “best blog” winner was PostSecret. It’s an amazing site. People write their deepest secrets – always anonymously – on postcards that they design (some are quite beautiful) and mail them in, and then the guy who runs the site posts them. If you haven’t been there, go check it out.

10-1 most of those postings are done by the people who started the site.

I followed the site when it was new, and also heard an interview on NPR with the guy who started it, also when it was new. I got no impression of fakeness from him, and the stuff posted seemed a) genuine and b) in many different styles, unlikely to be from the same person. It also doesn’t seem like the guy has the time to make even 1/10th of them now, let alone “most”. And as it has gotten more publicity, it makes a lot more sense to believe that lots of people would send submissions, than to believe that he’s doing them. What do you base your guess on? Why?

First, there is no group of people, It is just me.

Second, I find it interesting that visitors to the website find it so hard to believe that everyday people can create moving works of expressive art.

Third, I invite you to come to a PostSecret exhibit of the actual cards where you can see them for yourself. The Washington Post reviewed the 2,000 plus postcards at my last show and called it one of the best exhibits of 2005. I guess I fooled them too.

Any plans to bring the cards to the Boston area (or elsewhere in MA) anytime soon?

Hi David,

We are talking right now with some students to try and bring the exhibit to a MA college. We would also be happy to show at a gallery or museum.

(Sorry, I was so defensive before. I was acting on impulse.)
