I heard on the street yesterday that Franklin County Sheriff Fred Macdonald will endorse Chris Gabrieli for Governor. Gabrieli’s supposed to make an appearance in Greenfield on Thursday, before the big debate in Agawam Thursday night. I’m not sure if this is true statewide, but here in Western Massachusetts, sheriffs are political animals. Hampden County Sheriff Mike Ashe always has a brunch at Six Flags every year that draws about every bigwig politico in the state out for a meet and greet. Macdonald is no Mike Ashe, but his endorsement will mean something in Franklin County, if only it means that there’s a sheriff here who’s NOT endorsing AG Tom Reilly. Macdonald is currently building himself a new jail on Elm Street, but I think the coolest thing that he does is to wield the ceremonial halberd at the Northfield-Mount Hermon School graduation. It’s good to be the sheriff.
