It has been a position of Democrats that the rich, especially the super rich, should pay more taxes than they currently do. Democrats have been asking to raise taxes on the top 1% for quite a while. This is a position I agree with, but we have always had trouble making a good case for this. Maybe we should enlist Ben Stein. Ben Stein is, at least according to his piece You’re Rich? Terrific. Now Pay Up (reg required) ready to take the plunge.
Is it time for a graduated tax ballot initiative? I believe we are one of 5 states with a flat tax.

Polls consistently show that the American public wants higher taxes on corporations and upper income earners. We don’t really have to make the case — people already believe it. The problem is that it’s extremely difficult to take an aggressive “tax the rich” position and still raise enough money to run an effective campaign. If our campaigns were publicly-funded, we might see the public’s wishes actually come true.

I would be all for a graduated income tax initiative. Maybe if Neigbor to Neigbor is successful with their campaigns to raise the minimum wage and make health care a constitutional right, they could focus on a graduated income tax next, which I believe also requires an amendment to the state consitution.
