With typical understatement, in the latest MassINC magazine Christopher Lydon pronounces “An Emersonian transformation underway” in the media in these parts:
The Internet is that âbetter mousetrapâ to which, as Emerson said, the world beats a path. I love it for serving a precisely Emersonian vision of expressive democracy. Think of it as a tool for rescuing the individualââthe infinitude of the private manââfrom the mass (and from mass media), which was Emersonâs great project. âMasses!â he wailed; âthe calamity is the masses.â Think of the rising Internet media as the means by which millions already follow the commandments of Emersonâs essay âSelf-Reliance.â That is, âtrust thyself,â and speak for thyself, on thy Web site.
We get a nice mention. Check it out.

Like so many things…the internet and blogs are both over-villified and over-praised, I think. It’s a tool, to be used for good or evil. Hopefully mostly good. 🙂
