The Democrats seem to be running out of things to say about Kerry Healey. A 9 May post by Cyndi Roy on the Official Party Blog, “Healey admits she can’t build the ranks,” cites a 2002 admission by the Republican that she did not do well as Membership Secretary of the Harvard Republican Club more than 20 years ago. “‘I was membership secretary,” she said, ‘and I don’t think I was very successful in increasing membership,” Healey said, according to the blog. “Well, it’s indisputable. Kerry Healey just can’t get the job done … The Republican Party is in trouble. And it’s up to Kerry Healey to save it? I’d be worried….” Roy concludes.
Actually, I am worried if the best the Massachusetts Democratic Party can come up with against Kerry Healey is that she wasn’t a good Membership Secretary for the Harvard Republican Club. I encourage Party leaders to review Kerry Healey Out of Touch for an incessant stream of pointed, and often very funny, attacks on our sitting LG. If the Democrats are actually funding that site — the site’s disclaimer to the contrary notwithstanding — they should throw some leads to the team at the Official Blog.

I think Cyndi Roy’s posting on this issue is clear, articulate and on message. Elections, and running a political party, have many facets. The rest of Roy’s posting highlights another quote from Kerry Healey where Healey is critical of Jane Swift for not recruiting Republican candidates. I was always taught not to throw rocks if I was in a glass house. It seems this is exactly what Healey was doing in 2002.

The other reality, and this isn’t a reason for Democrats to get excited (especially beacause we have proven very capable of beating each other up during the Primary), is that recruitment of GOP down ballot candidates has proven abysmal on Healey’s watch. Despite not being very succesful on Election Day, Romney was able to recruit more candidates then the GOP in Massachusetts has lined up for an election in decades. With Romney now focused on running for President, it’s up to Healey to lead the GOP here in Massachusetts. From what I can tell she has so far failed.

In my opinion, whatever that’s worth and I’m sure many reading BMG don’t think it’s worth much, Roy is doing a fantastic job trying to voice a strong message for a Democratic State Party that has many more opinions then you would get reading most “lefty” blogs. So keep up the good work Ms. Roy!
