New Working Families Party has first organizational meeting

May 14, 2006 By Rand Wilson

About 50 organizers gathered on Sat. May 13 for the first meeting of a new Working Families organization. There was good turnout from labor (CWA, IBT, SEIU, UFCW, UAW, MTA, IBEW, and IUOE), community groups (Mass Senior Action, ACORN, City Life) and many leaders from communities of color in attendance.

Participants discussed the merits of cross endorsement voting and potential power of gaining our own ballot line.  The group pledged to secure broader support for a “yes” vote to change the election laws and to run a 3 percent candidate in a statewide race to secure our place on the ballot in future elections.

When someone said that this has the potential to be like the Mel King’s campaign for Mayor, I knew we were on the right track!
