My name is Patrick Abegg, and I am a volunteer for the Democratic Party. I currently serve as Vice-Chair of the First Essex and Middlesex Democratic Coalition, which is an organization of the 18 town and city committees in the First Essex and Middlesex Senate district (the most Republican in the state). I am also an elected delegate to the convention from Gloucester Ward 5.
One of my many projects has been to put together a delegate guide for the convention (those of you who get Arthur Powell’s e-newsletter have seen excerpts from that guide). So I know how much confusion there is about the convention for both delegates and other Democrats.
In the course of my work with the coalition, I have heard from many people who would like to get involved with the convention, and I have told them to contact the state party directly, and forwarded their names on to the headquarters in Boston. I suspect that some of you have done the same. This weekend I heard from some potential volunteers that no one from HQ had contacted them.
So Iâm going to take this on personally, and Iâd invite any Democrats who want to volunteer to contact me and Iâll get them into the volunteer team for the convention. I will be in at party HQ in Boston this week and should be able to get immediate turnaround for any volunteer who wants to help.
I can be reached at a special convention e-mail of mdconv@earthlink.net or by cell phone at 617-571-9720.
What opportunities are available? Unofficially, hereâs what I know:
If you can come into party HQ in Charlestown (3 blocks from the Orange Line at Sullivan Square), there will be work to be done all this week.
Friday, there will be setup activities all day in Worcester. Registration starts at 3, and we probably need volunteers all of the way through 9.
Saturday, things will run from 7 am on, possibly running as late as 6 pm.
Any time would be appreciated, although for the convention itself you should probably think in terms of at least 3 hours.
Worcester can be reached by commuter rail from Boston or by bus from Boston or Springfield.
If you have any special skill sets that might be appropriate for the convention, please let me know.
Also, if anyone has any other convention questions (media, delegate-related, or otherwise), Iâll do my best to get an answer.
Disclosure: I am not working for or with any of the statewide campaigns, and I have no official capacity with the state party.
