Bill Weld’s New York minute will come tomorrow when the state Republican Party holds its convention. The Daily News has already endorsed the former Massachusetts governor and would-be educator. The New York Times covers the story here. Weld is considered the likely Convention favorite because his opponent John Faso, a darling of the extremist Conservative Party, is considered too regressive to win in this increasingly blue state. Faso, among other positions, opposes abortion rights.

i’m so pulling for a strong Weld finish, maybe just out of Massachusetts pride đŸ™‚ and the fact that Spitzer’s obviously gonna win

You may think that the NY Conservative Party is a bunch of wacko extremists (and you’d mostly be right) but it bears repeating: no statewide Republican candidate in New York has won without Conservative backing since 1974.

This has only been exacerbated by NY’s fusion ballots. Hardcore Republicans can tell whether or not the Republican is a “RINO” just by looking at the Conservative ballot line. About 4-8% of the population does just that. Weld is going to have to scrounge for votes as it is; he can’t afford to lose that vote right off the bat.

I’m hoping that Weld gets more support on the Libertarian line than Fuso gets on the Conservative line, cause I’d rather have NY’s Republicans controled by Libertarians than Conservatives.

I’m surprised Weld’s candidacy is still alive. Do New York voters just not care what happened in Kentucky?

Simply put, NY Republicans are desperate. Spitzer is going to trounce whoever they put up.
