While not widely known, Gore had been contemplating a rematch with Bush in 2004. He changed his mind when his mother became ill and bedridden as he wanted to be present for her in her last months. He later endorsed Howard Dean who ran the kind of campaign that Gore was hoping to run himself. It was reported that his daughter Karenna, when asked at the Tennessee Democratic Party Convention this April if her father would run, said that she wanted him to, but that she was trying not to push him as he must decide for himself. And Gore’s wife Tipper gave a recent interview in which she stated that she was ready to support Al should he decide to run and that he would make a fantastic President.
On the MoveOn.org conference call with Gore held earlier this month, he said that while he didn’t have a plan to run, he wasn’t making a “Sherman statement” either, leaving the door open to the possibility. All together, I think we have a man who is sincerely attempting to divine how best to serve his country and the world.
“He won it and had it stolen from him, one woman at the meeting observed; his presidency was stolen from all of us. It would only be just to give it back, so it is our responsibility to generate the draft for him to run, and not take no for an answer!”
The group committed to sponsor a monthly Meetup on the first Tuesday of each month beginning August 1. Details will be posted to the events calendar.
